Abe Babior was elected as the Aleph Zadik Alephs first president and Nathan Mnookin would be the fraternitiy's first advisor.
A few months after the fraternity was started, Mnookin moved to Kansas City where he started another chapter of this fraternity. The men asked Sam Beber to be their next advisor. Beber had many dreams for the fraternity. He saw the fraternity spreading throught the Us. His Idea was to have an unmistakably Jewish fraternity. Sam Beber is now regarded as the founder of the Aleph Zadik Aleph.
On May 3, 1924, at a meeting at Harry Lapidus's house, the Aleph Zadik Aleph was declared an International order. At the same meeting, the Supreme Advisory Council was started as the policy making body of the fraternity.
During July 4-6 1924, the first National Convention of the Aleph Zadik
Aleph was held at the JCC in Omaha, Nebraska. At this time, there were
four chapters: Mother Chapter AZA #1 in Omaha, Nebraska, AZA #2 in Kansas
City, Kansas AZA #3 in Lincoln, Nebraska, and AZA #4 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Two-Thirds of the membership came for a weekend of brotherhood and friendship.
There was a deadlock for the Grand Aleph Godol race between Charles Shane
and William Horowitz. Eventualy, the decision wae=+2>Horowitz the first Grand Aleph
S'gan.
At the 1925 B'nai B'rith International Convention, Henry Monsky presented
a petition to get the Aleph Zadik Aleph adopted by B'nai B'rith. Of course,
The petition was accepted, and the Aleph Zadik Aleph was now the junior
order of B'nai B'rith.
On August 11,
1987, the great and grand chapter of Marc Chagall AZA was born. The following
week the first executive board was elected consisting of Jeremy "Fro" Brown,
Yoav Altman, Ari Harrison, and Danny Rich. A week after that, the first
meetingwas held at Carl's Jr. The chapter overcame its few problems with
great zest and saw a virtual membership explosion. At or first event, the
fore fathers of MCAZA spent their time dressing Iris Gabibitch's house
and bonding around the Nexus Pool(both which are still popular customs).
We survived through our first and most trying term as a new chapter, and
came out of Convention 1988 at the top of the San Diego Council, if not
the region. WE benefited greatly by the enthusiasm our first board had,
and its dedication. To the board of WInter Term '87-'88, we owe our chapter's
existence. At Convention 1987, then Regional Aleph Godol Sam Kramer said
in his states that Marc Chagall AZA would soon be the place to be. He was
right.
In April of 1988 we elected a new board to usher in a new era of Marc Chagall
AZA. This was our first summer term and Yoav Altman held the gavel. This
was the era of Chagall Council Dominance. At least five Marc Chagallers
could be found at just about every council event even though we were only
a year old, and we had the spirit that could not be rivaled by any other
chapter.
Our original chapter colors were flesh and blood to symbolize our mascot
Moshe the Mohel. Eventually, Moshe was eaten by his Pitbull, who was replaced
by the incredible Hulk. Since 1990, Hulk has reigned in Chagall and Green
and Black have been our colors ever since Moshe's unfortunate accident.
Throughout the
years Marc Chagall AZA has seen many membrs come and go, and we have gone
through many different experiences. The traditions and fraternity created
by our founding members in the eighties are still alive today. Our chapter
has been going for over 13 years now, and we still dominate the region,
and we will continue to do so for many more decades. We are easy to spot
at events, because we are the men in green and usually we are screaming
"OY VEY....BUSTA MOVE" at the top
of our lungs. May the "Green Dream live on forever!
